Topic: Historical Geography of Cherokee County

Chad Hoge

Objectives

1) To create a pictorial representation of the development of Cherokee County
2) To identify geographic patterns in the residential, commercial, social, and industrial development of the county
3) To identify a link between the geographic, economic, and historical development of the county

Materials Needed

Process

Copy the date of construction, resource number, historical theme, location, and outbuildings columns from specific records in the Latham Property Survey database into an Excel document and sort the data by year constructed. This will require you to assign a specific year to entries with circa dates, chose a year that seems to best reflect reality.

Use "Mapquest" to locate the earliest entry in the database, where an address is not provided, use the nearest intersection. Use the zoom function in "Mapquest" to locate the property on the 1830 map.

Use the paint brush function in Adobe Photoshop (or some other program) to place a dot on the property's location on the digital map for 1830. Use different colored dots to indicate which historical theme the property reflects - create a key to attach to the digital map

Try to use the outbuildings located on the property to determine what type of agriculture was practiced on the property, when possible indicate the type with a unique color

Repeat this process for all properties constructed on or before 1830.

Repeat the process for each of the historical maps. Each map will reflect the period of time between its date and that of the previous map, for example the 1864 map should have all the properties in the database that were constructed between the years 1847 and 1864, including 1864. Include the dots from the previous map; however make the color for older properties lighter to distinguish them from those constructed during the era indicated on the map.

This is a sample of what your map might look like.

Save these maps and the corresponding keys on a CD
