ETHEL STORY LINE
Opening   Marriage   Business Woman   Amanda Westbrook   Church   Mother

Not unknown for women in the Bible Belt, religion and church figured prominently in Ethel's life. She actively participated in church from a young age. As a teenager, Ethel enjoyed signing as a younger girl with church groups. Ethel and Asaph were active members of a community church who were not shy about their faith or conviction.

Learning the Story

Learning about religion can be a very delicate matter for public school teachers and students. The endeavor must be based on scholarly interests. The use of online resources requires that students rigorously apply their media literacy skills. The first question students must ask is: Why does this site exist? If the site exists to proselytize, then teachers and students must carefully consider the value, from an academic perspective, of the material contained within. We would like to suggest two online resources which, we believe, are not directed at advancing religious or faith-based message. Both are secondary resources about the Southern Baptist Church, which Ethel and Asaph belonged.

The first site is a hypertext presentation of the history of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1880 to 1920 titled, Incorporating "Our Southern Zion:" The Southern Baptist Convention, 1880 to 1920. The second site is a history of Baptist in Georgia presented on the Jack Tarver Libraries: Special Collection Department at Mercer University.

We think both of the websites might be used to help students understand the role of Southern Baptist institutions in the lives Baptists such as Ethel and Asaph.
