ETHEL STORY LINE
Opening   Marriage   Business Woman   Amanda Westbrook   Church   Mother

Not unknown for women in the Bible Belt, religion and church figured prominently in Ethel's life. She actively participated in church from a young age. As a teenager, Ethel enjoyed signing as a younger girl with church groups. Ethel and Asaph were active members of a community church who were not shy about their faith or conviction.

Writing the Story

We knew that religion played an important role in the everyday lives of the Perry family upon our first encounter with the Perry documents. Given the number of items collected by the Perry's which related to religion, we knew the story of how religion influenced the family would have to be a part of our story. We contemplated developing a full story line, but abandoned this idea due to the complexities associated with determining the depth of Ethel's and Asaph's religious convictions. We decided that making overgeneralizations or overly aggressive inferences about religion might spoil the veracity of the whole story.
