CANTON STORY LINE
The population shift from rural to urban America allowed men such as Asaph Perry to capitalize by supplying a growing and concentrated labor market with everyday goods and services. Asaph Perry did not work for the Canton Cotton Mill, but he did supply its workers. While the laborers rented their homes from the company, Asaph purchased his downtown residence, and other property as a means to secure his future well being. His eleven room home was within easy walking distance to the downtown. His store catered to the closely clustered mill wage earners who had money to spend on the staples Asaph sold and the tonsorial services his barber shop offered.
